No offence to fans of 'Next Gen', natch. What deCODE has in commmon with 'virtual' genes is that the data-sets they design are relevant to the purpose of engineering drugs that pin-point ultra-precise gene-variants in a population. It's about precision!

Similarly, reprogramming genes is a precise-science in that you're 'designing' a replacement body-part. (You might be surprised that a lot of the genome is redundant DNA - IE never used. Then again, isn't that the nature of data? 'Next Gen' fans might agree the character is humanoid & that's his appeal, right?)

 

As a sort of analogy, albeit a picturesque one, when is a Harley Davidson not a Harley Davidson? Let's say you 'deconstruct' it into a 'HD data-set'; now, say you mix the data-set with a Honda - it's still a motorbike though with some oddball measurements or specs! Even worse, add a Hummer: now you get a lot of arbitrary data.

 

The point is that design - even if it's mechanical - is never arbitrary. A Harley Roadster is different to a Harley whatever. If it's 'classic' all the specifications are super-precise & inter-related. Seemingly Harleys have a profile that endures & are still made in the same factory in Milwaukee (probably on the same assembly-line!)

 

Sorry about the diversion, folks: it seems to paint a neat picture of what's meant by ultra-accurate data - not simply technical but the reason why something has endurance. It's basically where all the parts are made to inter-relate & you can't change a thing (any modifications are equally precise!)

 POPULATION APPROACH

The only genuine basis for 'breeding genes' IN RELATIVELY ARBITRARY QUANTITY (ie. cell-lines of human genes from multiple cow-eggs) is to research stem-cell treatment for chronic diseases - often nervous/motor disorders. However, what the population approach (of deCODE, say) suggests is relating data to the 'real' world GETS RESULTS.  

In terms of this approach what it suggests is 'quality' data is preferable to arbitrary 'quantity'.  What this website is supposing is genetic data is made more specific by relating it to 'real' data: population sampling etc. This enables gene-variants to be cross-checked & pin-pointed - hence to develop drugs.

deCODE's* 'family tree' approach also brings-in more hereditary data on chronic diseases.

Rather than looking for hypothetical cures from breeding human hybrids (proponents assure us 99% human - then again, 1% is a hell of a lot as we know from the ease of interchanging 'marked' DNA to modify pluripotent stem-cells!), stem-cells can be used for repairing damaged nerves, muscle tissue etc. These reprogramming therapies (iPS) are proven to get results. As we all know human-clones are never perfect** & you never get 100% human genes in a hybrid. How imprecise can we get, here?  

Hybrid-clones are a classic case of flashy technology over & above genuine cures or therapies. Worse, it puts technology over & above the human IE. legitimising our 'parallel plotline' nicely (whether you call it 'anti-human' or flashy technological expediency's up to you).
